I know the comic is set in 2004 (which I just realized makes me the same age cohort as the cast), when did you start making the pages we've seen? I only ask because the references feel so cohesive it feels like you actually *wrote it* in 2004 as well, though I know the copyright dates are 17-19
Basically I want some history here on how these all came to be
Well, honestly...I kinda did write it back then. Sorta.
I worked on Weird in a Can throughout high school in 2004-08. Got about 15 or so chapters done?
But, that said...they were pretty terrible. I did a few revamps and restarts over the years, before deciding in 2015 to really buckle down and finally do it for real. Took me two years of very on-and-off work to get the first two chapters ready for the public.
It's kind of a hacky thing to do, I know, but the characters in the comic were originally transparently based on myself and my friends. I like to think that they've since developed into their own people now, though there's still some lingering influence.
That's cool and honestly sheds a lot of light on the process. I understand the revamping/restarting cycle of hell. I had several "first chapters" over the years that I bit by bit deleted, at least 70 pages of comic and possibly as much as 100 depending on what you consider actually the proper comic itself and what was its direct ancestor.
